Today we went on a tour on Bonaventure Cemetery. We learned about how the incidence of people being buried alive was. They started burying people with strings tied around their limbs (after not moving for 3 days) that were connected to a bell outside the grave. 17 % of people buried with a bell, were buried alive. The blue-ish colored thing is the bell.

We also learned about how terms like “graveyard shift” came about -the people that would watch the bodies at night for the first 3 days prior to burial (to make sure they are dead).

In the 3 days, people were payed out, they would begin to smell. There were contraptions that would allow flowers to be payed, to help cover up the smell of the decaying body, hence why in the modern day, people always want to send flowers.

We also learned that vaults and heavy slabs were used to prevent grave robbing.

We had lunch and then spent the afternoon at the pool, getting our sunshine therapy. I may or may not of had a margarita. Avery and I listened to our campfire playlist and we’re fine tuning it. I was also quizzing her on who sings what.

We went to dinner at Six Pence Pub, that was featured in the film Something to Talk About, staring Julia Roberts. The food was really yummy.

We then went on a candlelit tour, around 9:30. It featured the history of Savannah and how the squares of the town were built upon trenches used as mass graves during the civil war. Now when there is any construction that involves digging, they have to have a person from the city that comes to witness, because if bones are found (and they always are) they have to either rebirth the bones or relocate the bones to a local cemetery. Some of the bones are dated from the civil war, some from slavery, some from a doctor that amputated soldiers limbs (infection rate was high, so the patient usually died pretty quickly afterward. It was quite interesting and well worth it.

Avery and I did a lot of walking today. Our legs and feet are in competition for which is the sorest. Ibuprofen would be nice right about now….but Uni-kidney could be damaged….so….I will take soreness over kidney damage.

  1. So interesting! It makes me glad we live in modern times because being buried alive sounds just awful. I wonder if anybody truly made it out once buried? Talk about PTSD. The flower thing is fascinating too. It was their version of Frebreeze..... so gross. I recall those little nosegay flower bouquets were used by ladies back in the day to sniff to help cover up the smell of the humans around them. A big cheers to modern showers and deodorant. I guess living in 2022 isn't so bad after all. Ha!
