There was a time when Ethan didn’t want to spend any time in the living room OR with the dogs. Now he is a dog magnet. Sure, he was eating in the picture, but each day his gentleness and care towards the dogs increases.

We don’t really deserve dogs. They are such good therapy creatures. They are good at just being there as a silent reminder that you are loved. They are a reminder to be goofy and it is ok. They share a laugh with us…because we laugh at something they did. They take on the responsibility to protect us.

Paul and I have been really missing Phineas a lot. We even talked about getting another pitty block head dog. Trouble is…there are SUCH big shoes to fill. I know the training will fall on me, so I need to be ready. I am not quite there.

Ethan had a therapy appointment today. The therapist is allowing me to help her understand the things he is not able to verbalize.  I was able to describe Ethan becoming frustrated with feedback and shutting down. Some things he doesn’t even know he does, but I have the patterns memorized.

I am so impressed with his willingness to lay it all out for the therapist. She was even open to her suggestions about breathing techniques. He was open to learning about ways to work on his self esteem and reframe situations.

Ethan has not been working. He has been trying to formulate a plan to move forward. He has decided to grow his resume. He has applied to an internship to work at a machine shop. He was accepted and needs to move quickly to secure his position. This includes filling out LOTS of paperwork.

Tomorrow, he has to go and get a physical done, drug test and also he has his nephrology appointment in Rochester and needs to get his bloodwork done. That will be our morning.

I was going to have him go to the physical himself. Then he started filling out the questionnaire. Well crap!

Do you have epilepsy? Yes

Are you on blood thinners? Yes

Any heart surgery? Yes, yes and yes!

Any kidney issues? Yes!

Any history of stroke? You bet!

We then got to a few “no” questions….”Ethan…the good news is that in addition to all your other issues at least you aren’t a diabetic missing your limbs!” What a bright side! You can always find one.

I am going to ensure that this doctor doing the physical understands that all of this is controlled and not an issue moving forward so that Ethan has the chance to move forward with a career path. Cross your fingers and toes that it will work!

I am really hoping that Ethan’s past health issues aren’t going to hold him back.
