Last night sucked. Vomiting multiple times. Got about 3 hours of broken sleep collectively. I thought I was past the waking up in the night with a sick kid stage. One never knows how quickly they can sprint from a dead sleep until they hear their kid vomiting. I may qualify for the olympics on that one. Ethan developed a fever of 102.3. That is especially not good for a transplant kid with no immune system.
Then came the blood culture, labs, xray and the nurse told us she would get us a “poop hat”. I looked at her for a moment, trying to decide if it was a prank. “Is it like a cowboy hat or more of a sombrero?” I asked.
I had these grandiose visions of making this hat a fashion statement on the streets of New York City. In my vision I couldn’t decide if the power of the “poop hat” would be like a suppository (like you look at someone while wearing it and make them poop their pants) or if it would be at face value just a trendy fashion term. Either way, I was excited to see what a “poop hat” was.
The nurse brings this white plastic cowboy hat that you set in the toilet to catch a stool sample. Eww. That isn’t trendy at all. I certainly don’t want to wear that hat after it was used. They wanted to check Ethan for unhealthy gut flora. My most favorite part of the “poop hat” is that it says “do not sterilize” on it as if someone who has previously used one, wanted to re-use it. Barf.
All of this took place before 6:30 am. Ugh! Can I have a shot of espresso in my coffee? Maybe some alcohol?
Dialysis was setting up shortly after and people started coming in and out of the room like I had free samples of some tasty desserts or something. Good morning. It’s almost 8 am.
After dialysis, Ethan sat on the couch. I went to the store to pick up some candy at Ethan’s request. When I got back he had eaten almost all his lunch and kept going.
I just don’t understand the swinging pendulum that is this kids stomach.
He ate some candy and continued eating, pudding, part of an egg sandwich...a nurse walked in and told him she had to get another blood culture and essentially 2 covid swabs. One was for covid, one was for an upper respiratory PCR test. They are hunting for infection.
No one was going to wait to give antibiotics, we are starting the infusion right away. He felt ok but his fever was over 102.
We worked on PT together. Ethan decided that for dinner he wanted a burger. He has to have them well done to avoid any bacterial infection from food.
We decided to go to bed early tonight after last nights vomiting debacle. We are both tired.
Bright spot: Ethan made 20 ml of urine after his nephrologist told him he likely would make none after dialysis. GO KIDNEY....You are the little engine that could.
Happy Birthday Auntie Julie!
Wow, what a morning. You look great in the party hat, lol...only you! I hope you guys get a good nights sleep tonight.
ReplyDeleteThat fever can also leave as fast as it crept in. Ethan doesn’t need you Mr. Fever! Will be praying for that to make an exit!
For having the fever he sure did eat well the rest of the day. Way to go Ethan. Also great job on the urine production.
Hopefully tomorrow the fever will be gone, and you both have gotten a good nights sleep.
Poop hat.....hee hee hee!
ReplyDeleteContinued prayers coming your way. :)
Hope you guys get a better night of sleep and his fever goes away. Only you would take a photo with a shitter catcher Patti!! Ha ha!!!
ReplyDelete💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚🙏🙏🙏keep going Ethan..
ReplyDeleteOh no. I'm so sorry to hear this and am hoping with all my might that last night and today turns out to be a much better day. That poop hat is disgusting. xoxo
ReplyDeleteThe level of fight Ethan has is amazing. 💚
ReplyDeleteWell, dagnabbit.... I want him to have a steady stream of just good days even though I know this will happen... but it's so nice to have normal, Ethan is getting better days.... and yet our boy is so much better than he was, that he's a miracle kid, so I'm going with two thumbs up for the miracle side of it and wishing his gut would settle down and (yes, I'm a writer and I know this is a run-on sentence, but that's because I want it to be and there are no editors here, right????) that there is no, I repeat NO infection (well that's kind of dumb on my part because there's a fever, but a girl can hope....) Praying for you both, and praying that today, Sunday, is a good, solid, two thumbs up day. We love you guys!
