We traveled up to the islands today. As we were leaving, the dogs were so excited. I put them in the truck to wait. Moe decided to jump into the driver’s seat while Paul was inside the house finishing up. Paul is very particular about his vehicles. When he saw this walking up to his truck he was ranting about how he didn’t want Moe in the front seat.
I said “he was going to help you drive.” I made Paul pause and just look at him. “But isn’t he cute?” Begrudgingly Paul did agree that Moe looked cute in the driver’s seat.
We left Jiminy home with Ethan to keep him company.
It was rainy and blah the entire time. The ride was smooth with minimal swearing from Paul about the traffic.
We were laughing at the dog’s being goofy.
As we backed in, it got a little hairy. Paul was barking orders at me. “Keep the dog out of my way.” I reached over to grab the dog collar “I can’t see around your arm.” We have had many tense moments of backing the camper in. This can make or break a marriage. We have been at it over 25 years so I think we will survive it.
“Would you like me to hold the dog’s collar or keep my arm out of the way?” I delivered it in an even keeled but had snarky undertones. Oh boy. Help me…..help you.
We get pissy with one another during the back in portion of camping. So much that I often drive separate and arrive 1 hour after Paul to avoid conflict.
I saw we were sinking in. “We are sinking.” I said. It was ignored. Paul had me get out to make sure he didn’t hit anything. He backed up a bit and the tires started squealing and the truck lost traction. We had no choice but to leave it in that spot until tomorrow.
“If I would have known I was sinking, I would have stopped.” What? Really? I had to chalk it up to the saying that was pummeled into us in elementary school. I hated it at the time, but often find myself saying it as an adult.
“We are responsible for our actions, but our actions have consequences”
Paul wasn’t using his active listening ears at that moment. I can’t blame him. We all do that, especially in tense moments.
We made our spot work. The goal is to track minimal amounts of mud into the camper. My hope for the weekend, there is times on non rain to let the dogs potty. We camp so our dogs have a better life.
We spent the evening chatting with my aunt and uncle, and my cousin and his girlfriend. It was nice to be back.
