4/9/25

Today’s agenda included a full day’s work, a jaunt to Avery’s presentation for Scholar’s day, a meeting with the nephrologist and a doctor’s appointment for myself to discuss a travel plan for my back. Thank goodness for virtual visits.

My in-laws met me at our house. I took them on a scenic drive through the Brockport College campus. I pointed out the places Avery takes classes, where she has lived on campus and where her townhouse was when she worked her externship last year.

We ended up at the SERC which is where the event was. It was from Noon until 2, come and go as you please.

I had enough time to find Avery’s poster and release the I laws into the event while I went off to have a quiet phone call with Ethan’s nephrologist. I found a semi quiet place to chat.

Luckily Ethan’s immunology tests came back what is considered normal. The next step is to evaluate the blood flow to the kidney, then another biopsy. They detected slightly more scarring on last year’s biopsy compared to the previous year. The biopsy is considered the gold standard. Once they have that, the plan will be to adjust medications one at a time to see if that makes a difference in kidney values.

Ethan was vocal and expressed his frustration with the process. He feels like time drags on and each day his kidney is getting worse. He is scared he will need a new kidney and just wants all of this to stop.

After we made a plan, we hung up and it was back into Avery’s event.

It was odd to bounce from one frame of mind to another. Serious to excited. That quick.

Avery spent a lot of time on her poster and making sure it was representative of her experience and research last summer. Her poster shared how they used magnets to filter forever chemicals from water.

Forever chemicals are used in all sorts of products and can cause a multitude of health problems. Through research, Avery and her teacher made a substance that would attach to the forever chemicals and then a magnet could attract them. Viola!

Avery was surrounded by family and friends. I loved watching each of her friends come over and offer her support. I really was excited when I got to meet her teacher.

As we left, I thought about how thankful I was to have been able to take that time to go today. I did of course let my boss know I was stepping away for a bit. I can just make that time up someplace else. I chose to do so tonight  with Dateline on in the background.

I also had MY virtual do tor’s appointment where I shared with my doctor my travel plan thoughts and asked for two prescriptions to have on hand to get me through the travel portion of the trip. She was great and worked with me, writing the scripts. With medications and my physical therapy tools, I am hoping to be in decent shape. I have about a week to whip things into order.

I also started planning my meal preps to make this weekend for Ethan for food while we are gone. He is not much of a cooker. The fact he is making oatmeal is amazing. I placed some items in my virtual cart for pick up at a later date.

My back is still pretty sore, but I am doing all the things I learned at physical therapy to help.
