5/13/23

The flight home didn’t go as planned. We woke up at 4:15 am and hustled to the airport. We boarded our plane and everything was going according to plan. About 15 minutes into our flight, our plane turned around and headed back to Orlando for a “fuel leak”.

We were told to remain calm and not to worry about all the flashing lights and emergency vehicles that were going to meet us on the ground.

We landed and all of the emergency vehicles were quite a distance away. I told Sarah it was because they were just going to let us burn up if we caught fire.

Apparently fuel was gushing out of our plane. After we landed and it was evident we didn’t die, the emergency vehicles rushed over. We then had to sit on the plane for quite some time (likely waiting for a gate). We finally got off the broken plane and had to stand in a line with like 300 people while we were rebooked onto another flight.

The three of us got split up and we’re getting home at midnight connecting flights in different cities. Texas, Chicago and jfk. We did not accept this. As we were waiting in line we had a number to call and we were able to get on a flight together. We had about 7 hours to kill to do so.

We finally boarded the flight to JFK. We looked haggard and tired and the man at the gate took pity on us. He sat us in the first row together. Our flight left later than it was supposed to giving us 13 minutes from the time we land in JFK to the time we take off for Rochester.

While on the flight I asked our flight attendant for help. She vowed that we were 3 of 8 people transferring from plane 1 to plane 2 to the flight to Rochester. She said she couldn’t call them to hold the plane but we could be the first few off for the best chance possible.

We were sweating. No time for a potty stop. Do not pass go. Our flight sat on the tarmac because some dip shit lady kept standing up to get her bag and didn’t understand the directions of “stay seated or we can’t move”.

She just kept standing up.. the flight attendant was made several announcements including that they couldn’t move because she was standing. We started yelling at her to sit down. She just had this dumb smirk on her face.

We had a plan ready to get our things. Rachael was ready to “throw elbows” to get to her bag which was behind us.

Everyone disobeyed the flight attendant’s request to stay in their seat. Rachael did some sort of ballet/acrobatics to get to her bag as we were yelling chaotically to each other.  The people around us must have heard us complaining loudly and they stayed out of the way. They were cheering us on.

We sprinted off the plane running with pounds of luggage to the next gate. We made it one minute before they closed the door. Sweating and hot.

We made it home, finally. Hours after we were supposed to. While the day kind of sucked, we were grateful we didn’t blow up. We received kindness from the one representative that seated us together. We got to travel home together. We had many laughs along the way. I cried at least three times from laughing on the flight from Orlando to JFK.

My favorite quote of the day was a lady traveling with her young niece. “Why are you sniffing the seats? Do you like sniffing booties?”. Also when Paul picked me up, he had a beer waiting for me. So glad we didn’t die today.
