Hanging in there

I got to see Ethan around 10:40.  He is heavily sedated.  He has a can of worms for tubes going every which way. He is pale and is almost done with his second transfusion. He should have 1 nurse today but actually has three because he keeps throwing them curve balls and keeping them on their toes.  I told them that he doesn’t follow the rules well medically. They agree.

He has a partial lung collapse. They are thinking that will resolve over the next couple of days. They are starting anti rejection medication to initiate the destruction of all his T cells so that his body can’t attack his heart. Science is amazing.

He has sensors all over his head to monitor for swelling. He is getting labs done every 6 hours to make sure his liver, kidneys and other organs stay safe.

His eyes are vacant. His skin is pale. He is a sick kid. But I feel so much better being with him. Each day with the help of all the team, he will get stronger and stronger. His engine just needs some fine tuning.

Until then, I will hold his hand and tell him I am here. That he has an army of people thinking about him.
