More papers signed.  They are taking Ethan to surgery to see if they can help stabilize things for him. They are placing cannula’s to bypass his heart and lungs. They are putting them in his legs and neck.

The team has been throwing ideas around with multiple teams. Heart failure, pulmonary, surgical, cardiology, etc.  they have ultimately decided this is the best way for Ethan to rest himself. The list of complications is a bit overwhelming but the alternative is worse. He can’t sustain himself right now and needs help.

Ethan’s cardiologist came by and said “I am sure you have heard the plan.”

“Yes.” I was fighting the tears back but losing that battle. “This is really bad isn’t it?” He paused for a moment. I could tell he was choosing his words wisely.

“Listen, I am a realist. I need you to tell me straight forward, your thoughts.  Do NOT blow smoke up my ass.” I said sternly. 

“Yes this is not ideal.  We have seen worse but this has been a rough path to take. Yes it is bad. I think with our plan, it will give him a good chance to rest. I ha ent given up on him yet.” He said.

I stood there in the moment sort of choking on my own uvula. “I told you he was difficult. I told you he was a pain in the ass.”

He laughed and said “yeah he is. But he seems like a good guy.”

Ethan is a good guy. He’s a great guy. He is perfectly imperfect. I might be biased but I don’t care.

So as they packed up his shit show bed, I watched. It’s like expecting an elephant do ballet.  It just not ideal. Eight people trying to juggle cords and pumps and monitoring machines and an emergency sack of drugs.

He is down in the OR. I am hopeful he will get some relief. He will be on bypass for about 5-7 days. A nice rest for him. They just have to watch closely for bleeding due to all the blood thinners he is on.
