Ethan has had a relatively quiet day. He has been cooperating. Neurology came by to do an exam. I said "Not much to examine today, he's unconscious." I wasn't trying to be a jerk about it, it was just matter of fact. They did an exam and told me that his brain activity had decreased a little and would recommend another CT scan to make sure the clot had not changed at all or caused more damage. We will focus on that down the road. That is nothing I can change, if there is damage, we will deal with it later.
The staff at Ethan's allergy/immunology office were speedy fast getting Ethan's records over. As it turns out, Ethan has the compliment proteins he needs. Wow! That is awesome. I had a discussion with the cardiologist where he was breaking down the immune response to transplant tissue. We then spiraled into the compliment protein complex and how to look for rejection on a cellular level. I have decided I should teach a class on this with his help. He says the technical process and I put it in layman's terms.
For example: He said that the "T-cells attack the foreign material." I said "It's like the foreign material is a democrat at a T-cell or republican rally." Or vise versa. I could totally teach that class. It would be called "Simple Immunology: A Simple Class for Simple Brains." I could even illustrate my own text books.
Ethan was able to be turned without dropping his blood pressure immensely. He also was able to maintain his oxygen as they turn down the amount being infused into his tube. Ethan is almost done with his turkey and mashed potatoes with no gravy meal. It came as a 5 liter solution.
They came to remove Ethan's electrodes on his head from neurology (round 2). Interestingly enough, as they were doing it, Ethan went in to arrhythmia. Even without a voice, he gets his point across. He needed to be paced again. They had to quick get an EKG. Ethan proved it difficult to pace. He's just letting them know to be more gentle removing the electrodes. They were able to adjust his medication and remove the electrodes. They aren't too concerned about it as it was explained it will work itself out.
The rash on his chest has gotten pretty gross. We have deducted it is from the plastic covering they put on him while his chest was open. Hopefully that will heal up before he wakes up.
For Ethan's enrichment today, I played him some car racing videos. He also listened to Schitt's Creek. Tomorrow will be car racing videos and Arrested Development. Laughter is the best medicine right? These are all his favorite shows.
I ran into one of Ethan's nurses for several days ago in the café. He had been on a different floor this week. He asked how Ethan was doing and said he would pop by to say hi to him tomorrow, because he would be on our floor again. Also, Ethan's cardiologist this week said that the very first time we were admitted to ICU in the beginning of November, Ethan's doctor really liked him. Apparently he asks everyday about Ethan. I think it is so nice how much people care.
Ethan's peers have continued to do nice things for him. It is so heartwarming. Different clubs have mailed or collected things for him and us to make our lives a little bit easier. We are so grateful and amazed at how many people are helping us. Thank you.
"Come Ethan you can do this." We are all pulling for you!" Sounds like you both had a busy day. I hope tonight is uneventful and restful. Love you
ReplyDeleteMy husband suggested that car throttle might be right up Ethan's alley of interest. They are a group of brits that are motorheads. They have a youtube channel. Might be nice for a change up. :)
ReplyDeleteYes car throttle and donut media

ReplyDeleteI've only started reading this blog just now after my sister found it on FB. If you want to discuss transplants with 17 year olds... we can meet and talk. We're on the 6th floor and my son just had his transplant on 10/31. You can look at my website posthope.org/justice
ReplyDeleteSmall world!
Patti, I just found out about this...praying for you and for your son. Elizabeth Widlund (Miss Victoria Kitty's mom).
